How Improved Nutrition Could Decrease Risk of Cancer

Today, obesity reigns as one of the leading risk factors for chronic diseases, including certain types of cancers, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and chronic inflammation. Over the past 40 years there has been a remarkable epidemic that has shown greater prevalence of early-onset and persistent obesity among young adults [1]. This has not only increased the incidence of chronic diseases in early life stages, but also has linked to numerous obesity-related cancers in adults 25-50 years of age [2-4].

A 2019 large-scale study evaluated cancer trends in American young adults over a 20-year period and found an alarming rise in incidence in 6 of 12 obesity-related cancers [3, 4]. These cancers include colorectal, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, multiple myeloma, and pancreatic [3, 4]. Pediatricians, teachers, parents, dietitians, nutritionists, and public health officials must recognize this call to action as the future burden of these cancers are being substantiated.

Dr. De Angulo, a professor of nutrition at the University of Texas specializing in nutrition and cancer emphasizes colorectal cancer as one of the most preventable cancers in young adults [4, 5]. Diets rich in processed meats, red meats, and saturated fats produce the highest risk of colorectal cancer [5, 6]. Reducing ingestion of these known culprits along with the addition of whole grains in a diet can lower colorectal cancer risk by as much as 17 percent [6].

This mounting public health issue can be largely prevented by acting on modifiable risk factors for obesity. Focus on the importance of physical activity and nutrition education implemented in home and community settings should be a nation-wide goal. Successful collaborative efforts such as these could change how modern medicine is practiced as a shift toward wellness promotion and preventative care combats the early-onset of obesity-related cancers.
